    Moving In Checklist for Tenants

    Essential checklist for tenants moving into a new rental property. Don't miss anything important on move-in day.

    Before Moving Day

    Two Weeks Before:

    • Confirm your move-in date and key collection time
    • Arrange removals or van hire
    • Start packing non-essential items
    • Notify your current landlord of your move-out date
    • Set up mail redirection with Royal Mail

    One Week Before:

    • Confirm utility account transfers or new accounts
    • Pack room by room, labelling boxes clearly
    • Arrange contents insurance (highly recommended)
    • Notify relevant parties of your address change: bank, GP, employer, DVLA
    • Deep clean your current property if renting

    Day Before:

    • Pack essentials bag: toiletries, phone charger, medication, change of clothes, kettle, mugs, tea bags
    • Confirm key collection arrangements
    • Check weather and plan accordingly

    On Moving Day

    Key Collection:

    • Collect keys at the agreed time
    • Obtain all copies (front door, back door, communal areas, mailbox)
    • Get emergency contact numbers for landlord/agent
    • Collect any parking permits or fobs

    Immediate Checks:

    • Take meter readings (gas, electricity, water) and photograph them
    • Check the inventory against the property's actual condition
    • Photograph any existing damage or issues
    • Test all appliances, taps, and heating
    • Locate the stopcock, fuse box, and boiler controls
    • Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working
    • Ensure windows and doors lock properly

    Report Any Issues:

    • Note discrepancies on the inventory before signing
    • Report any problems to your letting agent immediately
    • Keep copies of all correspondence
